How odd. I thought it is possible since the lo-res windowed output indeed is filtered.
I'll try to upload some samples.

But as soon as you click on 640x480 the filter is gone or what.. and lo-res textures suck.

That "filter" in your screenshots is a graphics card setting I guess, antialiasing or anisotropic filtering. Looks a bit blurry.

Thank you! Thank you SO MUCH for releasing this!

I lost my SS1 cd about two years ago  :dropsdead: and now I stumble over this page.

I can not thank you enough for giving me the oppotunity to play one of the best games ever made, and surely my alltime favorite again.

I can't play bioshock on my system (Win2k) but now I will get my fix none the less *glee's*  :thumbwink:

I am also having the problem of the game crashing (NTVDM.EXE) on startup when using D3D 7.  9 works, but the game performance is sub-par in that mode.  The game worked properly with v0.6.

Well I've been wondering... It's definitely not antialiasing nor anisotropic filtering since these apply only to real 3D outputs via OpenGl or Direct3D and SS1 is not even in real 3D graphics. Antialiasing is supposed to smoothen jagged edges but on 3D models only not the whole output image and anisotropic filtering is in fact used to sharpen blurred graphic of far textures at steeply angeled surface. see pic

But I think I know why there's much better output on that SS1 even if blurred. ImageShack's thumbnails gave me the answer. The window size of 320x200 output is in fact scaled up to 648x427 (as seen on thumbnail size). That caused such an improvement...
Now if I'm only able to achvieve scaling up the window to something like 1024x768 that would help much even for 640x480 output. Anyone got an idea?

UPDATE:
I'VE GOT IT! I'VE GOT IT!
urm..it's not that good as I've expected and the performance is not good either.

So here's how to achieve that:
1. start ssp.exe and go into DGVESA settings
2. switch to DOS settings (I have better performance with Direct3D 9 renderer)
3. select Windowed screen mode and click OK
4. run game with DGVESA
5. start playing and switch to 640x400 resolution
6. press Ctrl+Alt+Del so task manager would pop-up
7. go to Aplication tab, right-click on dgVoodoo.. and select MAXIMIZE

That's it. The window of 640x480 output is maximised thus scaled up to your whole screen resolution. You'll get best results if your desktop resolution is set as high as possible... 1280x960 preferably.

I've uploaded DGVoodoo1.5patch.exe to solve this. Place this patch in your SHOCK dir and let it extract there. Then the D3D 7 renderer should work again for you.

Miracle.freak, I thought antialiasing/anisotropic filtering via the graphics card might make a difference because DGVESA translates the VESA calls into Direct3D. But I just had a test and apparently there is no difference. Stretching the interface like you did would certainly look a bit better if you use a 1024x768 window and maximize that. Depends on your desktop resolution I guess.

This keeps on happening to me right after it gets past the opening green window and I choose to play. I've also tried running it with SSP.exe and all those other ones and the exact same thing happens

The crash of NTVDM.exe is fixed by the patch I mentioned in the post above yours.
For the COM1 port error just hit "ignore".

The game should be started via SSP.exe, using other ways is only useful when you know what you are doing.

Updated to version 0.8c.
Everyone who downloaded a previous 0.8-version (0.8 or 0.8b) please see the patch that is attached to the first post in this thread.

Another update to version 0.8d. The patch has also been updated, so if you have 0.8 or 0.8b or 0.8c, you only need the patch to update. Place it in your SHOCK folder and let it extract there.

This update fixes the annoying com port error message at the start.

Hi there, I've been leeching around this site for a while now.
I still have my System Shock 1 cd around but never got it to fully work on XP.

Strange thing with this version, I simply can't get past the origin screen.
It's hard to figure if it hangs or not.

Really strange... Do you have latest VDMSound installed?

Thanks for 0.8d. There are no COM errors, game runs in mode 1 with Direct3d 9 renderer with great performance and flawless sound even on 800x600. Even more the mouse movement speed is fine and axis are balanced.

The only minor issue remainig are the cutscenes in res higher than 640x480.

KamikazeTutor, I guess there's no error message or anything?
If you got further with your own CD version I suggest you compare with/use your own CYB.CFG file. Make sure to make it read-only as otherwise it will get overwritten by the launcher.

I'll try when I find the cd lol.

Awsome job guys!

Thank you so much, System Shock has been my favorite game on PC (I like  :borg: Cyberpunk rolegame & stories), never seen after that a game that gives me comparable emotions... (yes, System Shock II, lol, but it was different... I missed so much the cyberspace part).

Thank you again!

Sorry, forgive me, I don't know if this is the right place for troubleshooting but:

I've downloaded SSP and installed it on my machine (WinXP)...
First time I've launch it everything went smooth.
Then I tryed to enable 800x600 mode and played whitout problems. Then 1024x768 mode and it was a bit choppy, but I was aware of this because I've read it on a previous post.

Then I switch back to 640x480 and then I renabled 800x600 mode.

The odd thing is that now I play without music... I still heard "Digital FX" and "Audio Messages" but the fantastic "Music"  of this game is gone...  :dropsdead:

> I have tried removing savexxx.dat files and restarting... nothing;
> I have tried to mess with .\RES\CYB.CFG  files (CYB.CFG, CYB.CFG~DEFAULT, CYB.CFG~VDMS)... no luck;

Do you think I can fix it or should I try to make a fresh reinstall?
Thank you ^^

It was the same problem as catbarf.
Now I can play it the right way. I could'nt tollerate the idea to have the System Shock Theme as my ringtones and not being able to hear the music ingame

Kudos to Kolya for his effort.

Could be a great find but "vesa.pif is not a valid win32-application" (vesa.pif ist keine zulässige win32-Anwendung) is the only result i can get - no matter what DGVESA-settings I try. Same with "mouse.pif"

The config.nt and autoexec.nt are in place, as well as command.com.

AMD 3200+ 64
Win XP home SP2
GeForce 6800GT
VDMsound yet not installed

Sigh, I suppose I'm simply too stupid for this.

Do you possibly have a 64-Bit system?
You may want to try running vesa.exe (or mouse.exe), but I'm not sure if System Shock will run at all on a Win64Bit rig.
In that case you should try DOSbox (DOS emulation software), I hear it runs SS1 quite well nowadays and isn't such a pain to set up anymore.

Hello Kolya!

Thanks for the quick reply. It's a 64 bit system indeed. I could have figured that out by myself, doh! I suggest you should address this issue in the readme as soon as a possible 64bit-incompatibility is confirmed by others. Will try at my laptop, though.

I used dosbox about half a year ago at 640x480 with an estimated framerate of 0.25fps  :dropsdead:

Best regards
