Hey all,

So I've followed the top rated modding guide on Steam very thoroughly, but when I start a new game I'm unable to enter the starting elevator because of an "SCP error - squirrel.osm not loaded" message. I went and checked the sq_scripts folder in SCP_beta4, and sure enough the file is there.

I've reinstalled SCP, rearranged my mod list, and looked online for help, but it seems like no one else is having this problem. I'm very new to modding games, so I'm kind of at a loss here. Does anyone have any suggestions?

patching up with the tool is always a good idea (if you have followed the steam guide, you probably did), but even the bare GOG/steam build is (very intentionally) set up to work with SCP, should manual loading of mods be required for whatever reason.

so you are either running a cd install manually patched with the raw NewDark files (that is simply unsupported), or something is blocking the scripts.

anyway, lets see your ss2.log (in the SS2 folder).

I'm running the fully updated Steam version. I tried following the newbie modding guide here, but I preferred the more in-depth approach taken by this one. It's "System Shock 2 Modding Guide" by Saleck. I'd post a url but I'm only a guest.

mod order already is in the log. anyway, it confirms that squirrel.osm fails to load - check the OSM folder, is the file actually there? if it is, try rightclicking it, open properties and see whether it's getting blocked by security, something like what you can see on the screen capture here (maybe explore the logs of your antivirus, it might be blocking the file as well). the file should be about 2.6MB (if it's smaller, it might be corrupted) - attaching for convenience.

one more idea - the game is on the L drive, try moving/copying it to the C drive (this will work, the build is portable), and see whether that makes it work (L is a bit further down the road than most apps expect).

That worked, thanks a ton!

However I've run into two more problems. First, no vocal clips are playing outside of cutscenes. Second, I'm unable to access the basic training tutorial.

Any ideas?

if some audio is not playing, check the audio options, and make sure the voice/ambient balance slider is right in the middle. file corruption might be the culprit as well, especially if the squirrel file was corrupted.

no idea what do you mean by not being able to access the tutorial - if you aren't getting teleported, that would again, point to scripts not working (missing or corrupted).

I was wrong about the tutorial section. Everything works except voiceovers during gameplay and audio logs. Oddly enough the enemy dialogues are still intact.

try changing the hw acceleration option to something else - there should be three options, on, off and openal, there is a good chance one will work properly.

The only thing that changed was turning it to anything but openal completely removed all sounds/music. Is there somewhere the voice files would be hiding in the SS2 folder?

snd.crf (about 140mb) and snd2.crf (about 120mb). any extra sound devices in your system, like dedicated/usb sound cards? I can see a Focusrite USB Audio in the log.

forgot to mention, in addition to changing the audio devices, try turning EAX on and off.

Just thought I'd hop in and confirm that I had the same issue with squirrel.osm. It wasn't being blocked by Windows Defender so I moved the install folder + mods from my E: drive to C:/Program Files (x86) and everything seems to be working fine at a glance.

Voodoo47, sorry to bother you again. I'm missing the squirrel.osm file. It is not in the sq_scripts folder nor is it in the osm folder. I ran a search inside of my shock file and it seems that squirrel.osm is nowhere to be found. I've ran the ss2tool patch 3 times now with no luck. What would be my next step? is there a way that can download just the squirel.osm script from somewhere else or is it possible for someone to upload a copy of their squirrel.osm script that I could download and plug into my osm folder?

the tool. admittedly, it's been ages since I've tried it on a cd game, but the entire point of it is that it chews through everything, and spits out a complete, fully working install, and the cd shouldn't be an exception.

what exactly can be found in your OSM folder?


//just tried to delete my OSM folder and running the tool in update mode, a proper OSM folder with all the files has been created without issues. maybe try that, and post the newest log.
