I downloaded and tested this, and it is indeed the HOTU version, and it ran just fine for me, after applying the SS2Tool.

So unless you forgot to follow their readme (for the oggsetup.exe) or made some mistake while using the SS2Tool, I'm not sure what the problem is.
Things to look out for:
- Don't patch this version with the official patch. ("Patching up" in the SS2Tool) But merge the CRF archives (subfeature of "Patching Up" in the SS2Tool)
- When the DDFix popup comes up (see image below) make sure you choose the same resolution you set up in the previous widescreen-mod-setup and then click "Apply Patch".

EDIT: Just remembered that: Some Vista systems seem to have problems with the DDFix setup. If you did everything as described above and it's still not working, try downloading the attached prepatched executable.
This is a temporary solution. We're working on a failsafe DDFix GUI.

I know this is gonna be a nuisance for you but I tried opening the thing and I got the same error once again.

I'll let you know, it did work when I selected "New game" on my first time playing it, it was when I got halfway through the game things got messed up.
