For a while now we have a feature in this forum to set an expiry date for attachments. I still think it could do with some explanation, if only so I can link this in the ABOUT thread.

Any visitor can attach files to their post, incl. guests. You will find the upload form when you click "Attachments and other options" below the post editor.
Right next to it you'll read "This file will expire in:" and a dropdown list, where you can select the expiry period for this file.

The available expiry periods differ between guests (7 days), members (up to 1 year) and forum staff and contributors (up to forever). After this time has passed the forum will automatically delete the attachment on its next clean-up run. When an attachment gets deleted a note is added to the post: [myimage.jpg expired]

Please choose an expiry period that seems appropriate. For example: If you have a problem with SS2 then a screenshot can be very useful to explain it. But it usually wont be needed for more than a few days. Whereas a new modification that you built is something we archive here and hence should never expire (ask a moderator if you cannot set this yourself).
I think you get the idea now. The point is that we don't want to host files forever that have become useless long ago. Of course we don't want to lose useful files either. The person posting the file should be able to predict this the best, if anyone.

Note that you can always at a later time edit your post and change or reset the expiry period of your attachments or remove them altogether.

You can find a list of your own attachments in your profile.

If you have any problems or suggestions for this feature, shoot!

See, seven days from now nobody will know what you're talking about.

But what about posting funny pictures?

Okay, the obvious answer is: Use an external image host. Because we're not here to collect funny pics. It would never end.

Of course since we switched to https, images that are embedded here via a http address will only be linked.

Because you cannot have unencrypted content inside an encrypted page without compromising security as a whole. Modern browsers will simply drop it for that same reason. So I wrote a script that links such pictures.

However you can embed images from an external image host, if they also serve it via https.
https://imgur.com/ is one such host. You have to change the protocol to https yourself though, as they don't have it in their regular embed codes.
So you upload the image that you want to embed here to imgur.com, copy the direct link they provide, add the s after http, wrap it in IMG tags and Bob's your uncle.
