Can't open a newer .MAX file version

I am looking for anyone who has a very recent version of 3ds max.  I don't know exactly how new because I can't tell what file version I have but I need to export this to 3ds or at least re-save it in 3ds max 7.  Can anyone help me with this? 

Alternatively, if you can tell me how I can convert a .max scene file into a universal model format without actually having the appropriate version of max installed... maybe some free online tool, that'd work too.  Thanks.

Did you try using Blender for conversion?
The 3ds support is quite well already.

Does blender open .max files though?  I didn't think it did.  I don't have an actual model file, just the max scene file.

Ah, sorry. I "overread" that it was a .max file.
No unfortunately Blender can't import that.

If you can't find someone with a newer 3DS Max Version you could install a trial version of the newest version and export it with that.
Although that seems to be a big hassle for a small task like this.
