It seems to be portable, so we're going to archive the final version here for posterity.
Pre-Alpha Demo Patch #1 Patch Notes:

-Texture filtering has been applied. The textures around the station will appear smoother and less pixelated.
-Visual effects have been improved and as well the addition of explosion visual and sound effects.
-Fragmentation grenades can now be thrown by the player. Right-click on the grenade from your inventory to throw or assign it to the hotbar and throw with the press of 1, 2, 3 or 4 on the keyboard.
-“Staminup” patches, “BeserkBooster” patches, and Battery packs can now be used by the player by right-clicking on them in the inventory.
-New melee attacks animations have been added. The Hacker will recoil when hitting a surface with the pipe.
-Reduced the swing delay of the pipe.
-Shortened pickup animations.
-Music alterations applied to the backing music around the station.
-Fixed a bug with game settings causing controls to lock when reloading the game.
-Item descriptions have been improved for the items around the demo.
-Various performance improvements.

Pre-Alpha Demo Patch #2 Patch Notes:

-Fixed a few user-reported crashes.

Yes, this should be moved to SS1 Remakes and Sequels.

the question would be - is this the first build, or the second? //it is the final build.

Yes, this should be moved to SS1 Remakes and Sequels.
We have two types of forums on this site in separate sections: the "Community" section contains regular discussion forums. The "SS1 Remakes & Sequels" board is one of them.
And we have the "File Archives" section where we archive downloadable files, like mods, tools and games. The "Looking Glass Classics" board, where I moved this thread, is such an archive.

It's the unity build, so I assume the first.

IIRC correctly there was a second build version on Unity.

In any case I was able to play through it completely, without Steam.

also, the demo is still available on GOG (the second unpatched release, older than the download here).

It seems that there is 1 version of the Demo I have been unable to find

So I've been able to find archives of the Unity Demo, the 2021 Medical Demo, and the Beta Demo is still up

There is a 2020 Demo (and it has two versions, idc which, tho there was a patch for it) that has some other differences, mostly small, but I was curious on playing it too, but I hadn't been able to find an archive
