Hi! I'm one of the admins at https://tcrf.net, and I also wrote most of the original System Shock articles on there a few years back.

Recently I started working on expanding/cleaning up some of the stuff I'd put up back then, and as part of that I also finally started digging into the leaked build of SS1 that was posted in this thread.

You can find the results here:
https://tcrf.net/Proto:System_Shock
https://tcrf.net/Proto:System_Shock/Map_Differences

Aside from what was mentioned in that earlier thread, there's some pretty interesting stuff to be found in this build, like:
  • Basically every map has some form of differences (in visuals, item placement, and sometimes even layout)
  • Some working animations for the scrapped "Sec-3" enemy
  • Different textures on level 9 that were later replaced
  • Changes to the properties and behavior of various enemies (including Diego and SHODAN)
  • Changes to properties of weapons, grenades, and other objects
  • Various other unfinished graphics, sounds, and text
  • Unfinished/rough-draft French and German translations

Overall, this build is a pretty interesting look at how the game was shaping up in the last month or so before its original release. It took quite a lot of digging to document it all, so please enjoy!

(e: argh, probably should have posted this in the SS1 forum instead - oh well)

Thanks for this, the new information is very interesting. I love TCRF already, so thanks for the website and for the new SS insights.

Indeed.
If I ever have time to finish my SS1 level, I will use the infested bridge textures in it. The alternative portrait is nice too.

I really like the cyborg elite corpse. It would have looked great if it were in all 8 directions.
