thanks again - and confirming, the steam release is officially botched straight out of the box. to hotfix this;

-kill all *.crf files in root (only leave patch_ext.crf)
-kill all *.dml files in root (make sure the files are present in /misdml first)
-kill shock2.gam in root (make sure the file is present in /Data first, if not, move it there instead of deleting)
-kill allobj.osm in root (make sure the file is present in /Data first, if not, move it there instead of deleting)
-kill patch_ext in Data/res (if present)

this is not necessary if you don't plan to install mods (but you apparently do).

didn't he say everything seems to be working right with the mods?

it just means he did not run into any issues. yet. for example, having the shock2.gam file in the root means all ADaoB gamesys fixes will not be applied, and not even I know what kind of mess is that going to create. those crfs in the root will also override any potential modified content, so a missing texture here and there, an old model instead of the new one etc. more incompatibility when trying to run multiplayer, as gamesys mismatch can occur. nasty stuff.

//do note that if you had ADaoB already installed, then applied the hotfix, you will need to start a new game to actually start properly using (the now active) ADaoB gamesys.

thanks again - and confirming, the steam release is officially botched straight out of the box. to hotfix this;

-kill all *.crf files in root (only leave patch_ext.crf) - DONE
-kill all *.dml files in root (make sure the files are present in /misdml first) - DONE. COPIES WERE IN /MISDML
-kill shock2.gam in root (make sure the file is present in /Data first, if not, move it there instead of deleting) - DONE. COPY WAS IN /DATA
-kill allobj.osm in root (make sure the file is present in /Data first, if not, move it there instead of deleting) - DONE. COPY WAS IN /DATA
-kill patch_ext in Data/res (if present) - DONE. COPY WAS IN DATA/RES.

Lets see what happens ...
EDIT:
I tested it and everything seems to be working as it did before. How certain are you that if you install those mods without modifying steam installation, you will encounter problems later on. And how certain are you that with that fix to delete unnecessary files, you will not encounter problems?

in case of ADaoB, 100% certain. the modified gamesys (place where all the game rules and settings are stored) will not be used, unless you perform the cleanup.
-kill patch_ext in Data/res (if present) - DONE. COPY WAS IN DATA/RES.
uhh, what did you do here? you were supposed to delete patch_ext in Data/res (only leaving the one in the root folder).

I did exactly that.

ok then. please report any issues (hopefully, there will be none).

If this is required for no issues with mods on the steam install, maybe the steps voodoo47 listed here should be in a sticky about fixing steam installs until steam does something about it.

this would require me to actually get the steam version so I would be able to verify the fix. not going to make sticky something that I did not verify myself. posted about the issue on steam forums, we'll see how fast will they react.
664a213463852
Meh. Why couldn't they simply get the GOG version?

664a21346390cvoodoo47

664a213463957
I'm assuming they did - the very first one. then they removed the GOG specific files from it (screwing up ss2tool's version detection system), and patched with 5.1, which resulted in the mess we see right now.
664a213463a7f
In that case they're selling software that is clearly labelled as licensed under GPL.
Either way, I'm not going to write another clean-up routine into SS2Tool because another big company screwed up. I'm in the middle of preparing my marriage and honeymoon and even if I wasn't I couldn't care less.

Steam-users, apparently you've been fucked. Go take it out on Steam/NightDive. Oh and you can stop slamming my server with your downloads now, because the stuff won't work on your broken SS2 install anyway. Just saying.

gamesys mods won't work, but texture and mesh mods shouldn't have too much issues. maybe.

I'm willing to help them fix things up, but this time, they will have to ask nicely. yeah, actually ask. will also provide support for the f*cked steam users - it's not really their fault. especially if one of them will take my half-jokingly made request for the free steam version seriously.

go enjoy the honeymoon, I've got this.

I want to keep the original game play without adding any additional content (new weapons, enemies, quests and so on). What mods do you recommend? I am mostly looking for something that makes the game more pleasing to the eyes and enhances the voices, menus, textures and models.

Now that the game is fixed I am still looking for more mods. I have pretty much installed everything that is listed in the newbie guide as it also has all the important ones. I also browsed the most popular threads in mod section, and found the mods below to be ok. Any other hidden gems that would make the game more visually impressive?
