This project consists of significantly improving System Shock 1 music quality, by using much better instruments found on the internet, and heavily modify or simply tweak them to make them sound just right with the original ingame MIDI files.

Here it is:
https://mega.nz/file/z5hCEDwZ#0bg6l3gbSbgWc5CQJiwQM6aV3voVtgx20LMq1mEy-Bw

If you don't already have a software able to read soundfonts (.sf2 files) I highly recommend Virtual MIDI Synth just like last time:
https://coolsoft.altervista.org/en/virtualmidisynth

Here is a video of the in game samples to demonstrate how it sounds:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o9bCLSaF-mQ

This is a follow-up to my arranged and faithful soundfonts I did several years ago, the big revision I teased a while back, essentially merging them into one lighter package that is both even more faithful to the original material and sounds significantly better thanks to much higher quality monitoring hardware on my end, and improved drums choice.
It was only made with System Shock in mind and will have missing instruments or sound out of place with other games.

Tweaked versions for the custom stories ReWired and Lazarus Decay will be coming very soon below in this post :)

This is the list of the soundfonts I used to select instruments for this project:

-ChoriumRevA
-Crisis General Midi v3.01
-FluidR3_GM
-Giant Soundfont V6.0
-GMRBasico1.1
-MuseScore
-SGM-V2.01
-Timbres Of Heaven GM_GS_XG_SFX V 3.4 Final
-WeedsGM3
-32MbGMStereo
-Musyng
-ColomboGMGS2
-FatBoy-v0.790
-GeneralUser GS v1.471
-UHD3

Just like last time, massive thanks to all the authors of these soundfonts, keep in mind that they are free of use as long as a project stays non commercial.

Had a quick jump through. Sounds nice. I'm sure many would enjoy it.

icemann I just did a last edit to restore some very small effects on one or 2 instruments, and did a subtle volume adjustement for one or two as well, I just updated the link, the soundfont has the same name but it's very slightly altered, I shouldn't be touching it anymore from now on. The infamous last minute changes haha :ninja:

Okay I massively updated it across the past month, but it should really be the last time now.

Did a little volume rebalance for a wider range of peripherals, in preparation for the ReWired variant I should start soon-ish.

Did an extremely minor reverb and volume adjust for very specific parts of 2 songs where heavy bass headsets would have slightly too much bass.

Just updated it with a very subtle rebalance on drums that could sound a bit too present in long sessions with rich bass sound systems, and an unwanted pan on one specific drum.

Kolya if you stumble on this post, would it be possible to update the permanent link you attached as well? I wanted to do it myself but I don't have the possiblity to make it last forever, thx.

Hey! A little confused. How do I install this?

You can play the midi files through an external device such as a Sound Canvas, or just listen to the MP3s...

Hello! As stated in the instructions, you need to download the soundfont, which is a .sf2 file. To read a .sf2 file you need a third party software since Windows cannot read them natively (unfortunately), I recommend Virtual MIDI Synth which is just fantastic.

Do these wooden flutes really fit the cyberpunk genre game with so many synths in ost already?  This does not feel like intended instrument for that. Always jarring for me to hear them in game. Otherwise great job.

It can be quite jarring at first, but pan flutes (I think that's what you're referring to?) were quite used in electronic music in the 90's, it created some sort of mystery sound effect I suppose? It's a bit weird by today's standards, but it fits the 90's pretty well imo, they definitely are in the original composition though.

Am I the only one who finds the buzziness and chunkiness of the original OPL soundtrack compelling given how industrial and mechanical the soundtrack is?

I don't like a lot of modern midi soundfonts because they tend to "round out" the sound (which makes it sound more natural), which is generally what you want for something like guitar riffs and drums (which is why Medical sounds so good with a modern soundfont), but when a soundtrack has a lot of high-pitched beeps and staccato sounds (like this one), it flattens everything and loses some of it's punch.
