How do you usually set up keybinds in SS2? One of the existing setups? WASD setup, based on an existing setup? Something completely your own?
664d0e926c7fa
I take what's loaded at first start and customize. But I'm not sure I needed to do that in the last few years since the standard layout matches my tastes exactly (Always crouch on C, WASD with W as run forward, Jump on Space, etc.).

pretty sure A and D for turning doesn't match anyone's preference.

That's not the default anymore, though, right?

I also use the default and then customize spacebar to jump, the a and d to strife and ctrl to crouch. The rest is like any other shooter.

Standard WASD + space to jump, like a normal person. Ctrl and/or C for crouch. Fire mode and ammo type mapped to F and V so all the weapon control keys are together.

I should add that this is another question aimed at a possible SS2Tool change. The options are:
- turn the default setup into a regular WASD setup (or whatever else most people agree on)
- create a new (WASD) setup that players can load
- turn the existing "Standard FPS" setup into something more useful
- ?

The default should at least be WASD (with AD strafing), jump on Space, Crouch on Ctrl and/or C, Walk on Shift, Reload on R, Inventory on Tab. Weapon keys are already numbered, the rest is rather special and highly subjective (I like b and o for weapon fiddling since it's the same in DX).

 :rolleyes:

If the consensus is to use WASD as default it's fine with me.  I don't use it but I don't mind changing it either.  It's nothing new with games these days.

Yeah this, The standard setup as it appears in the vast majority of FP games. Not really any reason to go any other way and could save a bit of everyone's time with the initial install rebind.
664d0e926dc87
I use that standard setup as well with c for crouch. But I use space for use, right mouse for jump, and left mouse for fire. I use b for ammo change. So yeah wasd is fine for me with a few changes.

WASD to move/strafe
Ctrl for (hold) crouch
Space for jump
Q/E for lean
R for reload
C for change ammo type
Z for change weapon mode
X lean forward
664d0e926e15d
Before SS2 I've played HL1 a lot, and got used it its control scheme. So it predicted my preferences:

WASD, ctrl and space - wanna have ability to crouch and jump while moving in any direction;
left mouse - fire, right mouse - inventory, middle mouse - use (E for use too);
TAB and Q - list weapons back and forward;
C and V - ammo and weapon settings (list something else in other games);
hypos: Z - medi, X - psi, shift+Z - anti-rad, shift+X - anti-toxin;
leaning: shift+directions (W, A, D);

also, not the case with this game, but I use F for flashlight or anything that is being used with the same purpose (even if it's some costly augmentation or magic). Just got used to the basics that F = light.

I always set all functions to the closest keys to wasd. It's weird how some developers bind M for map, K to kick, U to use.

Also, I never use the "walk" key. What's the point? I could crouch with more efficiency - move slow AND stay hidden.

And yeah, with the fully editable SS:EE controls I finally adapted it natively to my habits. It was so cool to play the way I do it better!

K to kick

Well, that's just stupid.  Everyone knows it's Press F to kick the undead.

I change them completely...never liked WASD

ins jump
right ctrl crouch
arrows for movement

among others

664d0e926e6c1
Weirdly enough, I've always preferred fire being the right mouse button.

664d0e926e850
WASD for movement with A+D for strafing and S for backwards (whoever made the default keybinds in this respect must have been on some kind of hallucinogen), C for crouch, then pretty much everything else is fine by default.
664d0e926e956
I think it was less about hallucinogens and more that at the time these standards weren't as established as they are today.

I get that to some extent (the remark was tongue in cheek), but even so, most shooters that I've played from that era had already adopted your standard WASD movement setup. A and D for turning? S for crouch? No easily accessible backwards movement by default? That feels extremely unintuitive especially from a layman's perspective. It's one of the initial turn offs for people I've tried to get into this game.
664d0e926ed71
Yeah, I'm not defending the control scheme.
664d0e926ef93
esdf for basic movement.

R for reload.

Q medhypo.

h for medkits.

Z for psi hypo.

v Change ammo type.

b Change gun mode.

mouse up for cycling weapons up, mouse down for downcycling weapons (reverse of the default.)

W I rarely used.

G is for grenade throwing in secmod.

U to play unread logs.

m for map.

Backspace to tell logs to shut up.

Space for jump.

Mouse one fire mouse two pick up/interact.

Tab inventory.

Shift run toggle.

ctrl crouch toggle.

I'm getting back to this to present the new default key binds I would like to integrate with SS2Tool.
Tell me if I made a mistake or if you have strong objections to these binds. I'm thinking that the original key binds will become a new set, along with "Standard" and "FPS", while these here will become the new default binds.

Commands that don't appear here are undefined. Commands that are bound to multiple key combos appear in different lines. (The game sorts them by keys.) The original default key binds are below.

Summary:
WASD for movement, leaning on Q and E (and X for forward lean), hold crouch on Ctrl and toggle crouch on C, walk modifier on Shift, Space for jump.
R reloads, F cycles ammo, V toggles weapon settings.
H shows the message history (instead of applying a med patch), so does L. The inventory opens with Tab, i or MB3. Previous and next weapon are on the mouse wheel. Patches and hypos have no keys defined.

walk modifier is largely redundant, would consider using shift for crouch instead, should be much more comfortable on most full size keyboards.
