I want to keep the original game play without adding any additional content (new weapons, enemies, quests and so on). What mods do you recommend? I am mostly looking for something that makes the game more pleasing to the eyes and enhances the voices, menus, textures and models.

While I am at it ... Why is the registering and the making of threads made so difficult for newcomers? I had to use some time to search for the "Verification Questions & Answers". I think this will prevent MANY newcomers from taking part in discussion. If someone wants to register they may want to read this https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=109.0

If you click on the link "MOTHER" above you will be guided to a collection of helpful stuff.

There you will find the "Newbie Modding Guide" which will lead you here
https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=4447.0

There is also a pretty good write up about this from RocketMan which you can find here

Ok, the newbie modding guide was pretty much what I was looking for.

Only thing I am now interested in is if I install the following:
1. SHTUP (object textures upgrade)
2. ADaoB (bug fixing and rebalancing)
3. SHMUP (original music, better quality)
4. Rebirth (new enemy models)
5. Four Hundred (environment texture upgrade)
6. Tacticool (weapons upgrade) - Choose the ADaoB compatible pistol and all other guns.
7. Eldron Psi Amp (another weapon)
8. Vurt's Space Textures (for nice window views)
9. Vurt's Goo (organics) - Choose all, but decide on one egg version

Can I also install the following or are there compatibility issues?

Vurth stuff

SS2 Rocketman Alternative Weapon pack 1.1
https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=679.0 (This will not work I presume?)

the alternative weapons pack may partially conflict with Tacticool - you can't have both wrenches installed, for example. only pick one of each weapon and you should be fine.

I understood that only one of the weapons in Tacticool pack works with ADaoB?
Also do I need to patch steam version or do something else to get them working on steam version? Or can I just unpack files to C:\Program Files (x86)\Steam\steamapps\common\SS2\DataPermMods folder?

if you use ADaoB, you need the ADaoB compatible pistol, all other weapons can be used right away. as for patching up the steam version, we simply don't know yet - you can help us by determining the version, check it by right clicking on shock2.exe, clicking properties, version/product version.

The version is 2.42, and here is directory structure if that helps somehow ...

thanks. this means installing ss2tool 5.1 shouldn't be necessary, as it has already been applied. feed the mods into DataPermMods or DataTempMods and you should be good to go.

Uhm, if SSTool is properly installed then what are the CRFs doing in the main folder?

664a20f9c7c74voodoo47

664a20f9c7ccb
nobody ever said the install was proper. god knows from where those three crfs in the root come from - they are way too small to be the full resource files.

//maybe the user installed some mods (improperly)?

I guess they put there some Steam logo to the interface, by swapping *.pcx files (iface.crf, intrface.crf), and some Steam info (strings.crf).

Edit: I did a quick check, and having files in root game folder overrides "Data" folder, so it works like having files in "DataPermMods".

It's just a guess. It would be nice if someone could confirm or refute it.
664a20f9c82a4
It's almost every CRF, would be funny to see a midwife with a big fat steam logo on her face. :p

It's 3 out of 16 CRFs :P, and specific to the interface.

Nope, those files are there automatically. I did not install or unpack any files to base folder. Checked it from two computers ...

No ss2tool was used, and the mods seem to be working alright ... at least so far.

ok, so now we actually don't know whether the DataPermMods and DataTempMods folders were present in the default steam install (steam posts suggest that they are). it would be quite helpful if you could create a fresh steam install to confirm this.

I see 5 .crf files in that screenshot.
I had the same files in the root dir when I had installed the old version of the German patch.
Code: [Select]
02.06.2011  16:11            24.729 iface.crf
02.06.2011  16:11             5.551 intrface.crf
02.06.2011  16:11           186.490 mesh.crf
02.06.2011  16:11            20.513 obj.crf
02.06.2011  16:11           117.674 strings.crf

Don't recall how I had installed the german patch (old version of SS2Tool ?), but I use the CD version of the game, not any online version.

yeah, that could very well be the german patch. this should not break any significant functionality, but can prevent some hires textures from being displayed (as the game will load the lowres german ones with highest priority). the shock2.gam in the root folder will cause issues when ADaoB is installed though - in that case, the shock2.gam in the root should be renamed or deleted.

Ok, this is CLEAR install of the game, I did not even run the game once. These are the exact files that steam will install, or what my computer will do automatically when viewing folder (as it may create some cache files or something ..)

thanks. definitely an ss2tool install. any chance you could zip the crf files in your root folder and upload them somewhere (sendspace or whatever)? these:
Code: [Select]
02.06.2011  16:11            24.729 iface.crf
02.06.2011  16:11             5.551 intrface.crf

02.06.2011  16:11            20.513 obj.crf
02.06.2011  16:11           117.674 strings.crf
they should be really small, so it shouldn't be a problem - would really like to know what is in there. if it's what I think it is, then the steam install is actually partially borked straight out of the box.
