ok, sure. anything goes in this topic. that's why it exists.

//alright, now that these mods (and I'm using the term broadly) are known to be SCP-incompatible, it's time to move this to Engineering - unlikely that the author will ever update them, but they can serve as a good example of how to NOT do things.

Well, my computer is quite old, yet I don't have a performance drop or any issues whatsoever. ¯\_(ツ)_/¯ And the size is actually lower than it was the original Cheburator900's mod. Even though I simply edited the color balance and contrast/brightness values of these two textures.

yes.. multi megabyte textures for super hipoly models.. that literally is perfection. I really don't see any way this could cause performance and other issues. like, not at all.

Wow! Thank You - for Xerxes especially. With my ReShade preset his image was quite omitted. But your texture solved this problem!
As for other textures - they are great. But I found alternate door and crate to be too bright for my taste. Plus I missed tne black line on the crate. So I edited them a bit (That crate line may look a bit rough on the edges - I'm no texture designer. But I don't think that's too critical). Maybe it will be useful for someone. :-)

I was aware, but don't know the details. anyway, 15 people have downloaded the Xerxes quasi-mod since the warning has been added, so that would make it about one person that should seek help in the nearest mental institution vising the forum each week.

I hadn't heard that the entire Machinima network had gone down. Apparently the original of that video was one of the many victims.

yes, that's why the first post says "epilepsy warning". mods available in this topic are basically for people who want a modded game, but also hate themselves very much.

shouldn't crash the game though. lets see.. ah yes, the gop bros have done it again, and made the textures not power of two sized, because why wouldn't they. I'll have to think about whether I want to fix this wreck or just kill it outright and live happily ever after.

//fixed and reuploaded. why am doing this to myself. added a low quality warning - lets consider this a psychology experiment, to see how many people will download it anyway (count currently sits at 70), because they just want to see the world burn.

Another System Shock reboot. This one's by Rockstar games and will supposedly have a 1970s porn vibe (without offending millennial morals most likely). I feel they are borrowing a bit much from Kill Bill, eg Shodan is a sword master, blah blah. But then Kill Bill stole it all before, so eh.

ah don't worry, I'm very sure everyone's country had a shitty leader/ruling party at some point, so no need to feel special or anything. also, everyone is always very polite here, unless people who repeatedly annoy everybody with nonsense come along, but I'm very sure that's not what's happening here.

We Russians and Ukrainians know about leaders and revolutionary things in life very much, despite what you brainwashed. Whenever you do not forget, everyone here likes Shamk 2. Be always polite and all the models that you do I'll do in one night, except for those that have to be done with rigging.

whatever the case, all the topics have now been merged into this one, all the stuff can be downloaded from the first post, the spasm-inducing Xerxes not being an exception, and whoever thinks they need any of this in their lives, can go ahead and make my day.

Well, it looks like the creator took the model and justed baked the texture (similiar to creating a bump map or the sorts). Usually you just apply it to a desired texture or use it as a map texture of some sort. And then you use a lower poly model without the added details.
This is now like... depth of the model with added depth of the texture, with a texture that only has the depth baked on it and nothing else.

don't think anything, just accept that nothing makes sense in this topic and move on.

they actually are modeled, see the doge textured crate on the previous page. it's really the (un)texture that makes it look so off.

or maybe I should finish the texture myself (note that the lights actually aren't lavender, they look so on his screenshot because he's using some crazy filter that is messing up the colors completely);
Geeze, I'd been assuming that the grills were modeled-in detail and that the texture itself was plain white. Even less impressed now.

well, if half a dozen people who have been modding SS2 since the first fish crawled out of the ocean worm slithered out of its egg say it's not finished enough to be considered a proper mod, then you can be very sure that's exactly the case. but if you think it's ok, then I don't mind, and just merge everything into one modtopic that you'll be able to edit as you see fit.

The last mode of the Cheburator900, 98% of it was done by Cheburator900, the criticism is inappropriate. Who wants to change the model and texture?

Последний мод Cheburator900, 98% его делал Cheburator900, критика неуместна.   Кто хочет может сам изменить модель и текстуру?

I guess we'll wait a day or two to see whether System has something to say, and then proceed and merge all his stuff into one topic.

I'm really tempted to use ZB's suggestion for its title.

« on: 31. January 2018, 17:58:22 »

Ah well, it's good enough to be considered working. So I would go with the idea of just creating a thread where all of this mini creatings get shoved into. So anyone who considers it good enough can get it and System might get a spur of aknowledgement which eventually will go on a trail of him improving to a point where people are actually glad of his creations.

The only downside which could get spawned from this is the possibility of it ending up in some kind of megamod where someone just pulled everything and shoved it into some half broken abomination.

apart from me being just a tiny bit sarcastic, and icemann perhaps a bit too direct, all comments are spot on, and give feedback and recommendations about what needs to be done.

and yeah, System has a history of being annoying and difficult to work with, and not putting in any effort to make things better, so no wonder we can get a bit grumpy once he drops some of his mystery bombs - for example, what is he doing here, posting a resource, or a mod? is he demanding that it should be moved to the mods subforum? asking for feedback? advertising his site (three links to it in a post that has eight words)?

we simply do not know.

If it's not good enough yet (and I agree), this thread can serve as a sounding board for improvement, which is what it's doing now, in a less than perfect way.  System has only made one post so far, so what have we got to complain about?  That the thread has carried on too long?  You have only yourselves to blame if you're bored of the length of the thread.  The personal bias against System is very clear to even the casual observer and while the feedback is unambiguous and true, the way you hurl it so to speak, is up to you.  Whatever he may have done in the past to become unpopular, he hasn't done it here.  He just posted a screenshot of some work he did and was a good sport about it.  I suggest we all do the same.  Twisting words is nothing more than social psychology.  It's actually a necessary part of our daily lives.  You can deliver the same information with intent to help or to hurt.  The fact that the information is true or false is largely irrelevant when it comes to the impact it has on the recipient.
Posted by: voodoo47
« on: 31. January 2018, 17:03:51 »

we can twist the words in thousand ways, but the point is, this is not good enough to be considered a proper mod in its current state. as soon as a somewhat proper texture is supplied, we can talk about things again.

as mentioned, this is not Fallout nexus, where everything is allowed just because it exists.

Come on guys.  It's not crap.  It's just not finished - the design leaves more to be desired but that's often the case with new work.  It's not always a home run on the first attempt.

As mentioned, I would add back a lot of the insets that gave the original some geometric depth.  Also add back the black seams and shadowing that suggests separations in the container.  The grille is a focal point and needs more contrasting colors.  Certain design features have been removed or simplified that perhaps should not have been.

The good news is that the geometry is more refined now.  This can be exploited to great effect with the right texturing.  I don't think the container needs to look blocky.  A high poly container with nicely rounded corners is less jarring to the eye.  And there are a ton of crates in the game so it's not the worst model to redo.  Just use the feedback here to make a rev2 and I'm sure people will download it.

« on: 31. January 2018, 14:12:21 »

or maybe just aim your efforts at assets that would actually benefit from having higher polycount - the AIs for example. regular objects like doors, trashcans, crates, bottles etc look allright even without having one million polygons (this can be a bad thing, actually - it's a sureproof way of murdering performance on slow machines).

as mentioned elsewhere, learning how to make things is good, but not every byproduct of that process needs to be made public.
Posted by: sarge945
« on: 31. January 2018, 13:13:29 »

I will be nice and give constructive criticism:

As blocky as the old model is, it definitely has a very powerful presence because of it. The new one looks too smooth and shiny. Maybe try remaking it to look more like the original, but with more minor detail and less changes to the overall appearance. Add back the grill and make the lights inset into the model rather than sticking out, and I think it will look a lot better. Less curvy and more hexagonal as well

or one could simply say that not all object mods are crated equal.

« on: 30. January 2018, 22:01:55 »

Yeah, it looks like most of it is a plain white texture.
Posted by: voodoo47
« on: 30. January 2018, 22:01:22 »

I'm slightly leaning towards not putting this up as a public mod until the texture is changed into something that would actually qualify as a texture. also, I really think this particular object doesn't need any attention, but hey, what do I know, I've been in the business of fixing up SS2 for only about a decade or so.

but maybe styrofoam is the new thing, and I'm just not seeing the bigger picture. opinions?

I mean, it's not bad. But it's not as good as the original either. And that was made 19 years ago on a time limit in an earlier version of the engine.

Mainly the new model lacks depth and definition. The grill on the old model was a great idea to achieve that. You made it a relief. That is objectively worse.
The original lights were sunk into the model, yours are slapped on.
The original had a defined carrying depression, yours has a flat depression with no apparent use. And lavender lights.
