Especially the music runs more more smoothly and the speed is acceptable even on my netbook. So I've set the game now to always run in DOSbox. This won't make a difference for anyone who didn't run the game natively on XP with VDMSound before.

If that still doesn't help and if you don't need it for anything else uninstall VDMSound.
In this case the game will automatically run with the included DOSbox.

Second time around I got a different error saying that the program 'could not access vdms.ini'
I did just recently install VDM sound, maybe this is part of the issue.
I am guessing this does not run through DOSBox?

Developed by Bullfrog in 1993, Syndicate is an isometric real-time strategy game with a dark sci-fi theme. SYNDICATE-Portable comes bundled with DOSbox and runs on Windows XP/Vista/7. It contains the expansion "American Revolt" with 3 new weapons, 21 new single player missions and 10 multiplayer missions.
The infamous drug control of your agents is explained in the included FAQ along with other valuable information to give you a quickstart into the game.
