Controls:
- I make cyberspace trust left click and w since that is how it was in the pre source port EE and what feels most comfortable to me
- I also make 1st and 2nd clicks left and right mouse buttons
- I tweak mouselook sensitivity since the default feels off

Graphics:
- I turn on DOS faces since I think they it better in with the rest of the graphic and Shodan's face looks better that way imo
- I turn off enhanced voxels to make it more pixelated as I think that looks better since it isn't full 3D in the same way SS2 is
- I turn up resolution in the in game menu but turn it down in the main menu (640x480)
- I do OpenGL and do GPU for the renderer a it matches the original a bit closer. I do wish I could do full/wide screen but it either stretches the graphics or it looks too clean when combined with the cleaned up pixels
- For classic I also like to tweak/turn up gamma since it looks off by default but in EE I find default works ok

If you use the latest version of SS2EE, then you can fix the jittery movement bug by running the game at a fixed 30 FPS, if you don't mind that frame-rate.  To do this:

Quote: "you can lock the game engine to 30 FPS by setting

seta cl_engineFPS 30

in %APPDATA%\Nightdive Studios\System Shock EE\kexengine.cfg
"

That's for the latest GOG version of SS1, which is version 1.2.16. But it apparently works for the Steam version, too.

I'll give this a try. I don't usually find games enjoyable sub-60 FPS though. My brain tends to notice it and really not like it.

I usually play EE when I play SS1. Though with the source port I find anytime I need to reinstall it I need to tweak the settings to get it feeling right cause the default ones are odd

Do you know what settings you normally change?

I'd recommend the current EE version

Nah, I can't stand the jaggy movement.

you get the same code for the reactor each time, but consider it random.

The EE'2015 has a hor- widescreen. I'd recommend the current EE version though (yeah, you get the same code for the reactor each time, but consider it random).

I'm looking to play SS1, and it seems all the port choices are bad.

DOS Version/SS Classic:
  • 4:3 Aspect Ratio
  • No Hardware Rendering
  • Requires fucking with Dosbox (not relevant to SS classic)
  • No Mouselook.

Shockolate:
  • 4:3 Aspect Ratio
  • Downressed to max of 1024x768
  • Gamma is wack, game is way too dark.

Enhanced Edition (previous patch)
  • Enemies get stuck, making the game too easy

Enhanced Edition (latest patch)
  • Movement is jittery
  • Reactor Code is Broken

Remake:
  • Is the remake

It seems like the best option currently is EE with the previous patch, as it has proper widescreen and non-jittery player movement. Hopefully turning up the difficulty to 3 will mitigate the stuck enemies.

Am I missing something? How has everyone been playing this game all these years? Can someone recommend a port that doesn't suck?
