That's a misleadingly mangled version of what actually happened.
there has long been a rumor that Dead Space was originally a third System Shock. Michael Condrey disavowed this rumor, saying that System Shock and its sequel were definitely a big influence, but the title was never officially attached.
while the influence of System Shock is still abundantly clear from the game, it was Resident Evil that became its main influence.

A System Shock sequel was never in planning nor development at Visceral Games. It was just an idea that was abandoned before they decided to make "Resident Evil in Space".

icemannDead Space got its name only because of the copyright hell around the System Shock series trademark which EA was trying to continue back then.
It was actually conceived as a System Shock 3 game right from the start, hence the remaining themes of biological monstrosities & crackpot AIs with just a simple guy caught in their place trying to fix whatever still can be.

literally every one of these models has a unique silhouette and would be easily distinguishable in a battle scenario, so I don't see the problem?

The two humanoids are the closest to each other, but the completely different head shapes and large sword is a dead giveaway

It's normal for concept art to add more bangs and whistles to a design and make it more complex than it actually turns out in the game, so I'm not sure what the goal for the in-game model would have been.

My opinion of these now is the same as when they were first revealed: Over-designed. Good enemy models should have distinct silhouettes, not be greebled all over with pipes and tubes sticking out everywhere.

The bots look Deus Ex HR-ish, partially due to the black and gold color theme. I like these designs because unlike the cyborg variants, these bionic designs strike a good balance between tech and bio in just the right way to be menacing and "kewl" at the same time.

That second one looks super Dead Space-ish.

Found some concept art and early models floating online about System Shock 3. Not that it matters now but I find it interesting.
