This reminds me intensely of a Commodore64 game. Cant remember the title.

That's the same guy who created Typhoon 2001! I wonder why that part of his page went offline.

Dogfight is a side-scrolling canine airplane dogfight game with local multiplayer (two players get to sit together and play on the same computer).
Lots of (pixellated) planes and bullets on screen at the same time provide for a lot of action. Reminds me of Wings of Fury
Frankly, there aren't many (free) (side-scrolling) dogfight games nowadays.
Features:
  • almost 150 airplanes
  • multiple weapons
  • Information on both the planes and the weapons
  • squad creation (create a squad combining different airplane classes)
  • Brain amputees and extremely stupid kamikaze AI (this one's from the website's Google translation XD )
  • customizable realism (friendly fire, duds etc.)
  • a lot many options
Download link http://dogfight.kuto.de/df_download.html (click any of the links under "Mirror 1" or "Mirror 2"). I suggest you get the zip version because the installer's in German.
The game starts up with German language, but you can set it to English. Look for an option called "Sprache" or look at the attached title image.
It initially goes to singleplayer mode. But select "Weapons Player 2" and untick "Computer Controlled" to get multiplayer. This is also where you set up button config and select your plane.
psst, by making both Player1 and Player2 computer controlled, you get to sit back and enjoy tens of fighter planes destroy each other. :)
