This is really frustrating me...  I've got System Shock 2 running  just fine in XP service pack 2 compatibility mode in the main menu and the cutscenes, but the instant it loads up a map it will end up crashing with an audio loop and frozen visuals.  The only way to close out of it after this, as well, is to bring up the task manager and force the game to terminate.
I'm using an XP/2000 fix that replaces the default shock2.exe with a 2,840kb one, along with Rebirth and SHTUP.  Is this just an issue in backwards compatibility?  And if so...  What sort of emulator or virtual machine should I look up to run it from?

Start here: SS2 Tech FAQ
Generally we don't provide support for any fixes that aren't from this site. Because it's not necessary. If you follow the FAQ you will get a running game in no time.

Okay...  After a fresh install and using SS2Tool the game crashes on startup without even reaching the menu.

Rename the file LGVID.AX in your game directory to LGVID.AX.BAK
This should get you running although without the cutscenes. Check the SS2 Videos / Cutscenes Guide to get cutscenes running as well.

Okay, just one more thing...  The main menu and loading screens look more pixelly than before.  I'm guessing it has something to do with the widescreen fix?  Do I even really need it at 1024x768 resolution?

The menu's resolution cannot be changed, so it may look weird on higher resolutions.

You can always try running without the widescreen mod. 1024x768 is one of the game's default resolutions anyway. Start DarkWidescreen.bat in your game folder to uninstall it.

Why is the topic about Windows 7 64-bit when the OP is using Windows XP?

...Because I'm using Windows 7 64-bit, not Windows XP.   :weird:

Ah, I can't read.  The only operating system mentioned in your post body is Windows XP, but you're talking about a compatibility mode.

Were you able to get the cutscenes working? I am also running Windows 7 x64, and still having problems with the cutscenes.

The steps I've followed so far:
Install SS2.
Ran the SS2Tool, checking everything (https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=392.0).
Verified the size of Credits.avi to be ~17MB.
Followed the instructions in the Videos/Cutscenes Guide (https://www.systemshock.org/index.php?topic=520.0):

# Got to: Start -> Accessories -> Right click: DOS prompt
# Select: Run As Administrator
# Type: regsvr32 "c:\your\path\to\SS2\LGVID.AX" Return
# On 32bit systems type: regsvr32 ir50_32.dll Return
# On 64bit systems type: regsvr32 "%windir%\sysWOW64\ir50_32.dll" Return
# On Vista/Windows7 run SS2 as admin

At this point, the game plays correctly through the training and career selection levels (I didn't test further). However, if I run the game without administrator privileges the cutscenes are skipped. If I run as administrator the game crashes whenever a cutscene would play. Is there anything else I should be trying?

No sooner do I type my problem up than I solve it: Disabling my secondary monitor fixed the issue.
