Although you cannot attack anything by yourself you can revive other lifeless grey bacteria who will follow you around and attack enemies for you. To direct their attacks somewhat you can open a lock on radius when close to an enemy.

Sometimes your helpers may get stuck in a wall but generally the path finding works very well. The idea of attacking by proxies and the fact you can revive your helpers if they are shot, allows for some interesting gameplay and strategies.
