I've been having some problems with SS2. At first the game worked normally, for about 1-2 hour, but after then it started crashing every few seconds. I get one of two errors, the generic "windows have encountered a problem" error, and an unknown exception 0xc0000008. The problems started in the engineering deck IIRC, in the radiated areas.

The affinity is already set to 1 core and I use the SS2tools patch, complete with all the fixes.

Can someone please help? I haven't even gotten to the fourth deck.

Windows 7 x64 Sp1
Intel 2 core duo 2.26Ghz
2.00GB ram
Graphics card is an integrated device, as its on a laptop. However, as I can play Serious Sam flawlessly, I don't think that's the problem.

this argument is invalid. do you have the latest drivers and directx9 installed? are you using any mods? does it crash randomly or while performing a certain action (hacking, opening inventory etc)?

I use Dx11, and no mods except for the SS2tools.
Haven't updated it in a while though.
Still, the crashes generally happen when I am in the middle of the game, a good 5 seconds or, if I'm lucky, 10 minutes. Do graphics problems work like that?

I just checked. No new drivers.

installing the latest dx9 will definitely not hurt. dx11 is irrelevant here, ss2 uses dx6, and I'm not sure how much of that legacy stuff is present in a default win7 install - loading up dx9 might help.
Do graphics problems work like that?
they work in mysterious ways.

665ca098254e8
Why is Dx11 irrelevant? Isn't it a superior version?

665ca0982559dvoodoo47

665ca098255ed
in this case, it is irrelevant, as ss2 is an old dx6 game, and as such, it will require the old legacy dx6 api to run properly. it is included in the dx9 redistributable I have linked. having dx11 installed means nothing if the game does not support it.

Nope, I still get the same errors. A pity though, cause it did look like it was going to work.

665ca09825832
ok, get ss2tool 3.1 from here, and go through the entire install procedure again, maybe that will get the game running without crashes. if not.. well, intel drivers Image: http://www.3dfx.cz/smile/su_002.gif

665ca098258beCthuluIsSpy

665ca0982590b
Why 3.1? Isn't the latest 3.6?
665ca09825c72
The affinity is already set to 1 core and I use the SS2tools patch, complete with all the fixes.

The SS2Tool already sets the affinity. Don't do it separately.

SS2Tool 3.1 has an older version of ddfix that works better with some Radeon cards on XP. Might help you too, but I doubt it.

665ca09825d86
I know, that's what I meant.
Also, does it matter that I did a "traditional" install? I've noticed on the SS2tools page that it said to copy and paste, but I just installed the game from the disk.
665ca09825e82
Yes, that does matter. The original installer is broken on Vista/7.
Reinstall and follow the instructions to the letter. You can keep your save games.

665ca09825f13CthuluIsSpy

665ca09825f5e
Well, I just tried that and it doesn't work.

Its that damn unknown exception error again.

665ca09825ffbvoodoo47

665ca098261b2
When does that error occur? Same as before? That is somewhere into the game?

Make sure...
- you install the SS2Tool as admin, then reboot.
- you start the game as admin.
- the game dir is not in "Program Files".
- shock2.exe has no compatibility modes set but try to "Disable desktop composition" (Aero) in shock2.exe's compatibility tab.

665ca0982625dCthuluIsSpy

665ca098262a7
What does unknown software exception mean anyway?

665ca09826343CthuluIsSpy

665ca09826395
The error happens at any given moment in game. Always when I am moving around or shooting.

I'll try disable desktop composition.

665ca098264ac
That still sounds like an affinity problem to me. Or a missing resource. Are you sure the game is vanilla?

Try starting the game, then alt-tab out of it. Bring up the task manager and right-click the game's process and set the affinity to one core there if it isn't. Return to the game.

665ca09826656CthuluIsSpy

665ca098266a5
Yes, I am sure the game is vanilla.
I checked the affinity. It is set to 1 core as normal.

I installed the SS2tools as admin, but the game refuses to start as admin. The game is located in C:\games\sshock2. I tried disabiling aero but I still get that error.

Here's the error reports. I can't make heads or tails of it

And there are several more. The file lgvid appears a couple of times. What does this mean?

665ca098267c5
The file lgvid.ax is the video handler for shock 2. Try renaming it. It's a small hope though as errors relating to the videos would only appear if a video is about to play - not mid-game.

The fact that the game refuses to start as admin is more interesting. Try right-clicking the game dir, select properties->security->Edit and give the "Users" group "Full control".

665ca0982692aCthuluIsSpy

665ca0982697e
Well, it accepts admin control, but now it crashes after 5 seconds of gameplay

What's ntdll, and why is it messing up my game?
665ca09826aab
After giving the Users group full control you should be able to play normally - that is not as admin but as a normal user. Did you try this?

What exactly is the name of the integrated graphics device and what driver version do you have?
