Other player has black screen?

Me and a friend of mine are playing through SS2 and we've come across a problem.

So first I saved and closed the game to change the difficulty, we went back in, loaded the save, my friend entered the game but I was stuck on the loading screen. I decided it wasn't a big deal and proceeded to close the game, as did he. Going back in all the saves were gone except for the autosave. Loaded that back up and found my friend clipping through walls whilst he described to me that I was running in circles inside of a door. This kept happening every time we reloaded the game even after we closed it until it came to a point where my friend started disappearing in the lobby. We managed to fix this but the next time we loaded the autosave all he saw was a black screen with the HUD over it. Although I did not see his character in-game he disconnected and it said at the top left that "[player] has disconnected", indicating that he was indeed in.

Any suggestions?

yeah, multiplayer is buggy, no news there.
