Topic: a CRAZY idea about an SS2 port Read 2431 times

So we all know it is pretty impossible to port System Shock 2 to consoles because of all that detailed keyboard shortcuts...

...And suddenly I had this crazy idea:

A PLAYSTATION VITA PORT.

The main catch here is, the Vita's touchscreen can be used for a lot of different inputs from inventory management to environmental interaction. It could solve most(if not all) problems about controlling the game.

And after we solve that problem, what could stop SHODAN conquering over our handhelds?

Do you think this port would work well if it were ever made(I know it won't :( )? Would you play that?

I think I certainly would   :)

Again and again, how cool it would be, but how unlikely? Unless you can make homebrew games for VITA, impossible even.

Your best bet to see SS2 on a console/tablet/mobile would be if the device can run some version of Wine or DOSBox (yes, dosbox). This isn't impossible but unlikely with mainstream devices that put a lot of emphasis on being walled gardens of profit. I'd look into something like the Ouya console.

When coming up with this idea, you ignored the fact that there is no working/complete source code to port from, or even compile on Windows. How did you plan to overcome that?

I always thought it was impossible to port, I was just thinking like "Wouldn't it be great if this could happen?". So I definitely have no way to overcome the problem you said.

That's why emulation is your best bet.

But we could imagine how emulating mouse and keyboard for a fpp game would turn out.

Maybe you can get it right after messing with it long enough. Or not.
Like said, it is the only way it could work now, and it's not even sure if you can boot the game at all, even then.

For sure not.

Then add in a degree of autoaim. SS2 is not one to bother with headshots or quick reflexes anyway.

To simplify, let's say we're running the game normally on Windows, not on console via emulator (which doesn't exist). How would you add autoaim function?

You can mod the gamesys for projectiles to home in on targets, even with specific limits of distance and maximum steer angle.

Something kind of like in this scene?

Nonsense. Almost LGS-style FPS/RPG's have been ported to consoles just fine. Shortcuts are just that- shortcuts. There are next/previous weapon functions in SS2 which for me is definitely faster on a console pad. Yes I play SS2 on a console pad.

There are benefits of console pads over M+K and vice-versa. The primary benefit of pads? All control immediately at your finger tips. To change weapon in SS2 on M+K using "shortcuts" you either have to take your hand off of the mouse or WASD. You don't have to do this on a pad (or M+K, mind). Another benefit is superior movement control and platforming. The trade off is number of buttons/keys and the precision of the mouse, but an experienced pad user hardly notices the difference when it cones to precision.

Here, this will get my point across more effectively: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WJlkhkLrOfs

Played with a console pad.

The Deus Ex experience using a console pad actually suffers slightly, not that you'll notice from the video, and nothing that cannot be circumvented by programming some new functions that have no downsides when it comes to play. System Shock 2 using a console pad only has one major downside, which too can be sorted via additional code with no downsides to a M+K user.

Like in this one:

Notice there is no small crosshair in the middle, only the big brackets one.

Lol, homing projectiles is entirely unnecessary and would take a large chunk of the fun out of the game. Even when using a touchpad (on a laptop) I wouldn't want homing/auto aim, and I've played it this way before, with the touchpad, was horrible.

If anyone attempts to port/emulate, don't listen to this guy. Same for the amazing inventory system, keep it the same. Needlessly simplifying it, or the game in general at all would be felonious.

I think that playing SS2 on a handheld gaming system is perhaps the most horrible thing anyone could deliberately inflict upon it. Your ideas are horrible, and you should feel horrible for having them.

If people buy a whole handheld console just to play one pokemon game, they can learn to play SS2 on it too.

Only possible to have it playable on the Vita. A Nintendo handheld wouldn't cut it.

^Since you mentioned Pokemon.

I would like SS2 on the Vita but I would hate it as well. Especially if it forced you to use touch screen functionality, which is something it wouldn't need to do.
