Many of you may have color problems with Fallout 1&2. Here is a fix that doesn't require messing up the movies to get it working right. If you changed that Mode=0 in the .ini for both games, change them back to 0.

http://wasteland.ag.ru/games/fallout/modifikatsii/

Scroll down to the DirectDraw Compatibility Tool and then find Русская версия 1.01: скачать ( 184 Кb ). It should have the download link. The closest thing to instructions I could find for it are posted down below...at the very bottom. Also, don't forget to backup the files you will be changing, just in case.

There is another possible fix, strange as it is going to sound, and even after installing the DD Comp Tool you may still have to use it, but the Comp Tool will make it work again if it doesn't work.

  • Right-click on desktop
  • Click Screen Resolution
  • Click Advanced settings
  • Click the Monitor tab
  • Just leave this up...I kid you not O_o

To fix the black screens that pop up frequently in Fallout 1, use this. On that same site I mentioned above, scroll down until you find Fallout 1 Screen Refresher, then look for скачать ( 6 Кb ). It should have a download link.

Unzip the entire contents of the Refresher zip to a folder you want to use as a program file folder for it, and click on fo1_screen_refresh.exe to start it before starting the game, just leave the little window that pops up open while you play. The movies in the game may blink a wee bit, but better than everything going black.

The fix for the music in Fallout 2 is not a file, but rather changes you need to make yourselves. Here is what you do(the wording is directly copied from where I found it, don't blame me for the bad grammar :P)...

go to your install directory.
go to *installdirectory*/data/sound/music
copy all files (ctrl+c)
go to *installdirectory*/sound/music
and past all the filer (ctrl+v)

OR

fallout2.cfg is pointing the game to the wrong music folder. data/sound/music is correct but it's listed as
music_path1=sound/music
music_path2=sound/music

but should be

music_path1=data\sound\music\
music_path2=data\sound\music\

You can either change it or copy the files.

...I think the stuff from before the 'OR' is mostly for the GoG version, and the stuff after the 'OR' is for the older Fallout 2 or the 'trilogy' or other versions, but any of them might be for any game version. All I know is that I only used the second variation of the music fix. Just make sure you don't save it as .txt, but save over the actual file...back it up beforehand, just in case.

All of this stuff should work with any version of Fallout 1 or 2 based on which game they are intended to be used to fix. I use them all with the Fallout Trilogy versions, with the included community patches.

Now, here is the closest thing to a readme for the DDraw Comp Tool from the source and link beforehand as well(again copied from source, the grammar is not meeeeee)...

DirectDraw Compatibility Tool

    Question about corrupted colors under Windows Vista/Seven is asked frequently present days. So galogen from Fallout.ru forums created a small useful program which makes access to the built-in (but rarely invoked) compatibility options of NT6 quick and simple. Should fix palette corruption not only for Fallout but for some other pre-DX8 games.

    DirectDraw Compatibility Tool
    ================================================== =============

    [ Program purpose ]

    DirectDraw Compatibility Tool is designed to fix color palette corruption
    in the old games (Fallout, Age of Empires, Worms Armageddon, Theme
    Hospital and other from the second half of the 90th).
    Corruption occurs because of incompatibility between graphical
    interface Windows Aero and games intended to work with DirectX 7
    DirectDraw or an older DirectX version. Both Windows Vista and
    Windows 7 have built-in compatibility tools for such games. But to invoke
    compatibility mode there should be information about specific exe-file in
    the corresponding part of the registry. DirectDraw Compatibility Tool allows
    to completely automate process of compatibility rules creation.

    [ Program functions ]

    DirectDraw Compatibility Tool has two operation modes:
    - create compatibility rules for a given game;
    - save compatibility rules to the reg-file.

    'Apply' button allows to automatically create compatibility rule. When
    field 'Pathname of the target exe-file' contains desired game, on button-
    press it will be analyzed and corresponding rule will be formed. If problems
    where caused by incompatibility on DirectDraw level they should cease
    immediately after rule creation. But it's probable that there are some other
    problems which have to be solved with different tools or could not be
    solved at all. For example Worms Armageddon version 1.3 doesn't run
    under Windows 7 x64, meanwhile version 3.6.29 processed with the
    Compatibility Tool runs smoothly under that OS.
    If 'Pathname of the target exe-file' is empty, button 'Apply' will open the
    file selection dialog.

    'Create reg-file' button allows to export compatibility rule as a Windows
    registry file. This file could be imported into the registry manually or
    distributed along with the game. I need to admit that reg-files are different
    for 32- and 64-bit Windows (64-bit version has keys in the additional registry
    brunch). In the case of the automatic rule creation ('Apply' button)
    DirectDraw Compatibility Tool detects Windows version itself. Manual
    application of the reg-file from the 32-bit Windows most probably will not
    give a positive result on the 64-bit OS but reg-file from the 64-bit Windows
    could be used on the 32-bit OS version seamlessly. In the latter case one
    redundant registry key will be created.

    [ Supported games ]

    Updated list of the supported games will be published on the DirectDraw
    Compatibility Tool web-page. Click 'homepage' link in the upper right
    corner of the program window to get there. If you managed to solve
    problems with a game which is not in the list, you could help the project
    leaving a comment on the site.
    At the current moment color corruption has been fixed for Fallout 1,
    Fallout 2, Worms Armageddon (version 3.6.29), WarCraft 2 Battle.net
    Edition and Theme Hospital. This method should work for Age of Empires
    as well but has not been really tested.

    [ From author ]

    Hope I made a life of an old-gamers and fans a little easier. Any
    comment and suggestion are welcome, especially since the program
    homepage is my blog.

The color thing has been an off and on problem...but this is actually probably easier to setup than sfall, and more stable at least.

The high res patch basically lets you see the entire area you are in, and it can make it impossible to leave 1 or 2 areas by making the green exit spaces unreachable, strangely enough. Also, it is only for FO1.

Used Fallout Fixt and F2RP, I think both have sfall in them, and were extremely easy to setup.

I like the ones I use, but it would be nice for you to post up a location where people who want to try those can get them. 8)
