That may  or may not be as easy to implement as it sounds.  It would require re-balancing the entire game for two very different play modes.  It is why the game re-balancing mods for Oblivion (OOO, for example) never really worked too well, for example.

You wouldn't have to rebalance anything for one of the modes, all the classic values and item placements are right there for the taking in SS1 and its various guides, only the AI would need a small boost so you don't run circles around it with the new interface.
