Help! SS1 crashes on elevator to level 4 (where my needed items are!)

Hello all!  Any help would be greatly appreciated.

In System Shock 1 (SSP):
After finishing up on Level 4 (storage), I dropped all my items that I thought were extra onto the floor of the freight elevator, most notably all the extra plastique (I kept 1 in inventory).  Now, MANY hours later, I'm on level 7 and I need the rest of the plastiques.  Unfortunately, every time I try to use the elevator back to level 4, the game consistently crashes to desktop.  It seems likely that the items on the elevator are the cause.  Does anyone know of a way around this bug?  I've googled a bunch, but been unable to find anything useful. 

Or, is there any way to accomplish the destroy-the-antennae task with something other than plastique?
