While I was playing, I kept thinking back to my conversation with Cyberpunk 2020 creator Mike Pondsmith. This, I think, is a cyberpunk game that captures the social and political aspects of the genre, as well as the body horror and the credibility of the tech. What it doesn’t have is the cool factor, and that’s because we’re only shown one part of the world – a part where everything has gone to hell and where nobody wants to draw attention to themselves. It’s the Cronenbergian cyberpunk game I never knew I wanted, and it’s shot right into my top ten of the year so far.

A splendid hybrid of CSI, cyberpunk and Silent Hill woven around a potent central performance, spoiled a bit by unconvincing scare tactics.

This is a niche genre that needs new revisions and new pioneers so it can keep evolving as we inch closer to seeing its fictional warnings play out in real life, and Observer adds to the familiar parables in fascinating and unexpected ways. In that respect, and on so many other levels, Observer is a haunting and remarkable achievement.

Bloober Team’s latest is one of the scariest horror experiences I’ve played in a long time, and its strong sense of place, story, and action put it above the majority of other games in the genre. Observer is simply the best of both worlds and is a must-play for anyone who considers themselves a fan of either sci-fi or horror.

Steam user reviews are mostly positive too but there are some disappointed people too.

I'll have to try this one myself!

Looks quite interesting. I'm going to wait till it drops in price / gets a good discount.

Love though how as your playing you see hallucinations all over the place, not knowing what's real and what isn't. Would really mess with your head. The mind hack sections in particular.

The real-world parts look interesting, but I don't think I could bear to wade through the 8-minute-long surreal and unintelligible interactive cutscenes.

Yeah, that could be a bit distressing. I bought and played for about 30mins but currently don't have time to continue. It is oozing grim cyberpunk-flair and ambition and is great looking. However it is also pretty clear that this is not the AAA-ImSim of your (my) dreams because (mostly based on what I've read) it's much more like a first person adventure - all about story, atmosphere and puzzles.  The controls are ok but certainly could feel smoother. I pretty much knew it since I watched the 10min. gameplay-trailer I had initially posted but if you don't know what you are in for and let your expectations run wild, you're in danger of feeling disappointed about the gameplay-mechanics, I guess (as reflected by some of the more negative user reviews). I will post more impressions once I got to play it longer.

What NV said. It looks like a bad acid trip of a guy with a raspberry pi strapped to his hand. Not sure I need that.

I assume (and hope) that sequences like that in the trailer are not happening multiple times.

Wired reviewed Observer very positively though it doesn't quite do away with my expectation of multiple acid trips: https://www.wired.com/story/observer-review

I've played it a bit more now and must confirm that the trippy stuff is playing a bigger role then I had expected and it is indeed feeling a bit straining / tough to stomach. But it's also very, very fascinating!

Observer is not a game that I can easily recommend to everyone because it's a quite special experience. I guess people who don't like watching intense arthouse-movies because they don't make you feel comfortable or laughing, won't like Observer either. But if you are into Cyberpunk and happen to enjoy a demanding but well-written experience from time to time, I suggest you try it. Just to give you an idea of how it feels to me emotionally, I'd say like when I played games like, "Sanitarium", "I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream" mixed with some of the darker bits of "Max Payne 1&2". Personally, I'm glad that I bought it.

Is it a bit like that game that just looks like extreme interference going on 24/7?

Excuse the bad analogy but I can't remember the games name. All I recall is that it looked like a VHS video which had been re-copied too many times. Extreme amounts of distortion etc. Starts with you being at the (simulated) dos prompt then loading up the games .exe file then it goes from there. I remember really liking that game, despite all the interference going on.

[edit]
And google is no help for me on finding the name of it. Grr.

I don't think I know this game but in Observer it's more about graphic/audio glitches, time lapse effects (and/or frame skipping) as well as bizarre environments (i.e. Escher-like never ending floors). Then there are two types of scan-systems that you can use for investigating crime scenes that use color-filters and a highlight-system for objects of interest. Most of the trippy stuff described above happens when you are jacked into some victims' memory but since your charakter is augmented, you have to take some kind of drug to keep you "synchronized" (think DX HR/MDs Neuropozyne). If you don't take it, even your "real life(?)"-vision get's increasingly glitchy.

That's the one :).

They need to release the full release of that game already.

I'm pretty sure a later version was released on Steam at some point.

What we need is cyberpunk that takes us by the throat and shows us just how bad things can get.
That's precisely where Observer—the new first person exploration game and detective sim from Bloober Team—takes us.

The description of the games' tone matches my experience with it.

Currently 10% off @ https://www.humblebundle.com/store/observer . Not much but maybe interesting for someone who's planning to get it.

RISE FROM YOUR GRAVE.

Been playing a bit of this game lately. This game is a hidden gem and then some. Has elements of point and click adventures, cyberpunk (in a BIG way), hacking, and horror.

The stuff you see when hacking into the minds of people is just horrifying. I've never seen anything like it before. When you finally make it out, it does feel like waking up from a dream. This games fantastic, and worthy of playing. Don't let this game slip you by, like System Shock did for A LOT of people. Yes it's nothing like System Shock, but I just mean in that it's a hidden gem worth playing.

Just be sure to have surround sound with the volume cranked right up and all the lights off, then your in for a real  treat :cthulhu:. I love the mini game you find on all the computers as well. So retro, but quite challenging as you unlock the later levels.

Glad you like it, I got sidetracked but want to finish it, thanks for the reminder. If you haven't played SOMA yet, you really may want to do that sometime! Pretty sure you'll like it.

The newest Humble Bundle is another good opportunity to get SOMA:

Edit: I bought that bundle myself and now have a SOMA-key that I'm willing to gift to the first person to pm me about it.
