There's someone who got wind of the InkyBlackness editor and was overjoyed to finally be able to make SS1 levels.
Right now, he's streaming: https://www.twitch.tv/the_3rdplayer/

Here's the Twitter user with some in-progress screenshots: https://twitter.com/the_3RDplayer

THIS

We need more SS1 in the form of custom levels.  Great!

Wonderful feeling to see so familiar looking level but completely unidentifiable.
I would love to play a new SS1 levels!

I actually got quite inspired by that. I might have to try it out myself :)

In case you are not following the_3rdplayer on Twitter, here's a recent message:
Okay, I promised a playable beta of the map for a few people at the end of this week. I keep my promises. If I had given it out earlier you would have received 40% less. In just 2 days we are at 90% compleition. Lets go the last stretch.
(Screenshots come with the tweet - if you want to spoil yourself with the map layout)

Nearing completion:
The final cyberspace level is finished. The very first system shock fanmission is finished. Just some last polishing, then I gonna release the final test-version to whoever asks this saturday. Ask away! ;)
Source: Twitter.

(You'll have to be on Twitter or in Discord to get in contact with the_3RDplayer.)

Stephen Kick replied on Twitter that they'll support the release, and referred to the workshop page as well (which is still unclear what is being meant).

Can't say much, but I haven't had this much System Shock fun in ages.  Hopefully after a few typos to cleanup, 3RDplayer will have this ready for the masses ASAP!  8)

This is just the motivation I needed!

So where is this mod set? Citadel? Another station?

From the release article on ModDB:
...a brand new story with 3 new real world and 4 new cyberspace levels in this Singleplayer campaign taking place on the Hospital Ship UNN Bismarck.

As one of the beta-testers, I really enjoyed it. After knowing every inch of Citadel by heart, this one was refreshingly challenging.

the built in FM selector in the SS EE SP (System Shock Enhanced Edition Source Port) doesn't seem to be compatible though (or working at all after the last update, for that matter). lets hope they'll fix it - having to mess around with game files is a sure-proof way of deterring users from trying it out.

tried to run it under SS EE SP, the walls are sometimes glitching out and the game crashes when the piece of paper under the table near the keypad is frobbed.

I never noticed that.

I just spent the last few hours playing through this. Great stuff. Actual voice acting for the audio logs would have been better and the levels are VERY maze-like. I got completely lost for a good while in the final cyberspace level. But it's some good fun, and nice to be playing new singleplayer content for SS1 for the first time in 24 years. Damn I feel old saying that.

How many years after SS1's events does this one take place? The UNN wasn't around until a bit before SS2 if I remember right.

So how did everyone else go with it?

So far I only had time to play the first public beta version.
And this one was already great. In comparison, Citadel I know by heart down to the inch - yet this one was refreshingly challenging.

Apart from that, on a personal level it is great that after years of our "failure" of TSSHP, I could finally make something that people could use and build something enjoyable for all :)

Major props to both 3RDplayer and dertseha on this!!  You all are making my SS dreams come true before I could (and still plan on doing) with my Citadel project.  This has been a huge boost to my motivation so thank you both.

Apart from that, on a personal level it is great that after years of our "failure" of TSSHP

That one is no'ones fault "Jim The Hairy", the main coder on the project just vanished into thin air and never returned. No'one could ever have predicted that + for a long time people expected his eventual return, which never happened. End of the day, the project resulted in a massive documentation of everything SS1 related which has gone on to assist future projects. So in that, a great service to the Shock community was made.

As for FM loading and player direction stuff - As we have the source code, and have a source port nearly operational, couldn't those things be coded in? Later on down the line, be nice if a FM loader was developed. Eventually we're going to have more SS1 FMs (hopefully), so having a loader would be of great benefit to the community.

Or to go the direction that the Doom source ports did things - To allow the program to be associated with all files of a certain extension, so that double clicking a master file of sorts would load all the rest and autorun it. That for me would be most ideal.

To clarify: The word "our" was not meant in terms of "us, as community", instead of as an "us, the TSSHP team, where I, previously known as firefreak, was a member of". I fully agree that we benefit from the specs-document immensely. And also that we couldn't predict Jims vanishing.
The "failure" is under quotes because it is, after all, a project that I was part in, which didn't finish (and ultimately disappointed the fanbase) - so, having built an editor that is now usable, is something I am proud of.
(Despite the editor requiring now a complete rewrite ;) )

As for FM loading and player direction stuff ...
There's right now a lot of discussion about this mod-loading going on - both here on ssorg and on Discord :)
