He may have dropped the content of the SS2Tool translation download into the manually downloaded translation.

I doubt that an archive like that could be created on a windows system.

Anyway, I renamed the archives here to prevent part of the problem.

I patched with SS2Tool, then placed Mods in the DMM folder. The install we're talking about there was no SS2Tool downloaded translation, since the game was set to english in Steam when downloading. That's why I manually downloaded the mod and placed it in the DMM folder.

it simply seems like the DE translation mod has been installed twice into the same location, with one source using caps and the other not, resulting in duplicate folders. I may try to recreate this later this year.

I don't really know. What happens when you merge folder "abc" and "ABC" with two different files in them on Windows, zip it up, and extract that on Linux? I wasn't aware how that could cause problems.

on windows, you will get just one folder with all the files. so the merge must have had happened on linux, as only there two folders with the same name (the only difference beings capital/not capital letters) can exist at the same location.

I'm not sure. Will investigate on the weekend.

The more interesting question is why that causes problems. Even if you have several folders, one empty, one with the correct file, you should still get a working mod. Wine emulates a primitive version of NTFS and should therefore not care about capitalization, so neither should the manager, nor the game.

I'm guessing the engine just isn't expecting to be fed two folders with the same name from one location, and most likely doesn't load them at all as result. should be very easy to test with some visual update mod like Rebirth, if you have a linux machine capable of running SS2 at hand (I currently don't) - just enable the mod, copy the mesh folder, rename to MESH (so you'd have both mesh and MESH folders there with the same content), and see whether you'll get the new models ingame.

Rebirth works. Rebirth still works, if I copy the mesh folder and rename it to MESH and have both lower and uppercase folders there. Only Rebirth was active.

interesting. maybe one set of the folders ended up being empty?

Maybe. Hard to say now, after the reinstall.

but once you get to the later stages of the game, and choose your psi disciplines right, you can walk around laughing while everything around you just whimpers and dies.
