I am using only SS2Tool without any mods. What can I do about this?

I think you want to look at the config file: cam_ext.cfg
The display mode settings are right at the start.

There's nothing related to FPS except framerate cap, which is at 144.

I thought the vsync_mode might be interesting to you.
But I'm also sensing some potential confusion about the relation of FPS and and refresh rate here. Could you explain what you are trying to achieve and why?

72 FPS isn't too shabby and your monitor is capable of displaying it. So what seems to be the problem?

Right now I'm using "vsync_mode 7", which according to your comments in cam_ext is made for high Hz monitors such as mine. What do the other values of vsync_mode do? The reason why I want to unlock my FPS above 72 is because I have gotten used to playing games in at least 100 FPS and anything below looks stuttery to me. I also see a correlation between Hz and FPS here since 72 is exactly half of 144, my refresh rate, that's why I believe that something is locking my FPS to half my refresh rate.

A quick Google search shows that this happens to players in various games and is related to vsync settings in their graphics card driver.

I somehow managed to get my FPS to 144, but there is some weird stutter effect that is only visible while looking at some object, otherwise everything is smooth. The UI text is also very pixelated, any info on how I can fix this?

Bear in mind that SS2 is one of the games where the physics freak out at high frame rates, so if you manage to get it running at 144 FPS, you'll also need to enable the physics update cap in cam_ext.cfg. More discussion here:

As for the UI text, SS2 uses bitmap fonts that were originally drawn for 640x480 resolution. When running at higher resolutions, you get the choice of displaying them 1:1, in which case they become tiny, or scaling them up, in which case they become pixelated.

Yes, I did set "phys_freq" to 60 and I found the UI command, but this stutter-like issue still persists. It's very obvious at 60 FPS. Here's a quick video of it: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yrppk97Im3Q

Have you tried the recommendations in the troubleshooting document that's included with NewDark?

Problem:
Uneven/jerky frame rate and/or laggy mouse movement even though the
system should be fast enough to do better.
Cause:
Computer is rendering too many frames in advance.
Solutions:
* Set "d3d_disp_limit_gpu_frames 1 1".
* Set frame rate limiter ("framerate_cap") to a frame rate slightly
above the monitor refresh rate (for example 70 to 80 for a 60Hz
monitor).

Both suggestions do not fix my issue, thank you for helping though.

Alright, so it seems that phys_freq causes the weird stutter. Disabling it fixes it. I am not sure if it'll introduce any gamebreaking issues, testing right now.

Try standing in place and jumping. If it's weird, physics is updating too fast.

Everything seems okay with phys_freq off. Tried comparing with it on, but I saw no difference.

Apologies for the bump, but for what it's worth, Coverdrave, I seem to have achieved 144fps gameplay on a 144hz / G-SYNC monitor under the following conditions:

- Forcing vertical sync ON via the global profile on the Nvidia control panel
- G-SYNC enabled for full screen mode

In cam_ext.cfg:
- framerate_cap 154.0
- ";phys_freq 60" (with ; so it's unused)

In game I tried jumping up and down as Zylon suggested and everything seems to be working as it should. Swinging the wrench looked smoother and I can't say I noticed any stuttering. Hope you are able to get it working (if you haven't already!)
