I've followed the SS2 Technical FAQ to install the boxed (OEM) game (copied to disk and executed sstool) and mod manager (including a few mods) plus procured a XFI  and loaded ALchemy but I'm still unable to enable hardware acceleration and EAX at the Audio menu. I've also searched this board looking for an answer to no avail. Does anyone have any ideas?

Sounds like you have not successfully enabled Alchemy for the game, see Creative's FAQ on Alchemy
Sorry, I cannot help you any better. Maybe someone else here has a similar setup.
